Bruce W. Retzsch, AIA
A transplant from the Midwest, Bruce and wife Joan relocated to South Florida in 1982 to open a branch office for a Chicago-based architectural firm until joining a prominent Boca Raton firm as principal in early 1986.
A resident of the City of Boca Raton since 1984, Bruce served as a member of the Boca Raton Downtown Advisory Committee for four years and three years on its predecessor. He was a member of the Northwest Sub-Area Planning Committee and the Multi-Modal Traffic Study Group working with Mayor Susan Haynie.
He has moderated panel discussions on LEED and has served on panels for other south Florida real estate trade associations and the Society for Marking Professional Services. A long-time member of the Urban Land Institute, Bruce was co-chair of the Collegiate Challenge for several years and has served on two Technical Assistance Panels. He has been a proud member and supporter of the National Association of Industrial Office Properties (NAIOP) since 1986 and has served on the organization’s Board of Directors and several committees.
A longtime member of the American Institute of Architects, Bruce has participated on a number of Design Awards Committees and juries and chaired the Palm Beach Chapter’s committee in 2016 and 2017. He was the recipient of the Chapter’s John Stetson, FAIA Award in 2016. He recently presented a program to the Ft Lauderdale chapter titled, “Design Principles and Trends in Industrial Architecture.” Testament to his executive leadership skills, in 2008 Bruce was honored by the South Florida Business Journal as part of its Ultimate CEO program.
A graduate of the University of Illinois, Bruce holds a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies and a Master of Architecture in Urban Design. He spent his senior year at L’Unite Pedegogique 3 in Versailles, France, where he gained an education unrelated to his university studies.
In addition to his passion for the built urban environment, Bruce is active in Boca Raton Community Church and as a fundraiser for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society due to Joan’s MS diagnosis in 1992. He is also recognized for his amazing talent to memorize and randomly recite musical lyrics on a dime which are always on point to the conversation at hand. His office nickname is “Brucio”, thanks to his Colombian partners, and in other circles he’s referred to as “The Groover” due to his use of the word “groovy” in everyday conversation.
Over the years Bruce has served as Principal-in-Charge on numerous projects. A few of his more recent and prominent assignments include:
